I finished laying 72 flags for a new shed base/path about 2 months ago but being a novice flagger, I didn't point the flags as I went. Bad move. I have just spent over 3 hours clearing the joints of various garden debris. I have read through some previous posts and come across a number of references to SBR (Styrene Butadiene Resin) as an agent that bonds the mortar to the slabs. I went round to some of the local DIY sheds without success (except for some plasticiser). Is it worth the effort of trying to track this product down as the area is going to have some fairly heavy foot traffic??
Thanks
Pointing Flags - Mortar Addmixtures
You are unlikely to be able to source SBR via a DIY shed. It's a specialist construction product with limited appeal to the average DIYer. You should, however, be able to get it at a decent Builder's Merchant.
As for whether it's needed on yur project: I doubt it. We tend to use SBR-improved mortars for pavements that will be subjected to regular and heavy vehicular traffic, not for garden paths.
