I have to take up the existing cracked concrete on my drive to excavate for the new block paving. I am planning to hire a concrete crusher so that I can re-use this material as (part of ) the sub-base. The question is: Will I need to add anything to the resulting crushed material so that it has a good mix of sizes, i.e. right down to the 'fines' and if so, what? Or will the crusher produce this range of sized material anyway?

ive not used a crusher, never looked in to its actual value compared to removing hardcore and bringing in pre-crushed concrete. i do know they kick up a fair bit of dust so i would expect to see plenty of fines and really these are key to using crushed, ask the company who are supplying the crusher, they will have the answer.
sorry i cant be of more help but saw no reply and something is better than nowt

Hi - I used Dan's machine and it was awesome. I crushed an old concrete path which I first had to use a breaker on. The resulting crusher run was very similar to MOT - large bits were possibly marginally over the recommended limit - perhaps 50mm but there were plenty of fines. I have had a granite patio on this for a year and no problems.

I'd prefer crushing my own than buying crusher run as you know exactly what you've put into it.

Thanks for the help lads, it sounds like the crusher will do what I want, and the web site link is particularly useful as it gives some examples of how long it takes to do it's stuff. I'll let you know how I get on. Gary
