Hi, I am laying a new patio on a sub base mot type 1, using a mix of 1:4 cement to sharp sand as my mortar. My question is the flags I am using are granite and very smooth underneath, will these bed down and stick ok to the mortar or do I need to use something else to help then adhere?
Thanks in advance
Paul

you would be best to use a bond bridge
this is a slurry of SBR and neat cement painted on the back of each flag before you lay them
the idea being that they *stick* to the bedding layer

why risk it paul?
half the posts on this forum are from ppl whose flags are moving a week after being laid ,and thats sandstone and limestone
granite is a lot less porous than those

Just been to see about 60m2 of slate tiles done by builder which all needs to come up, poor bedding and no bond, sad thing is all the building/brick work etc they have done looks top notch. Go for the SBR, save the future hassle !

we used easipoint bond plus on the granite setts when we done oxford circus (42,000 people an hour is what westminster council predict pass through there).that is the only time we have used anything on granite setts though .i laid some last week for a speed table on a junction on regent street ,no bonding .i think the grout is the key to setts .we always use easipoint granatech.(like iron when gone off )
