Since sodium chlorate was band I've been having difficulty finding a cost effective non selective ground kill weedkiller for use prior to some tarmac works and on block paving.

Can any one suggest a commercial scale alternative please?

Unless you are registered as a sprayer user, getting anything other than the stuff from garden centres will be hard,

if you are close to a farmer might be worth asking him for assistance

i usually use a pre-emergance weed killer such as dicolbennie or cassaran, in a granular form scattered over the sub-base proir to tarmac or gravel work, but dont walk on it once spread as it get on shoes and travels with you.....lol MSH :)

Dichlobenil and directly, the branded Casoron are now black listed.

Was brilliant stuff, that saved us a shedload of work. We are left with spraying Roundup now which is hardly worth the effort

Yeah, it's been withdrawn from production after Monsanto's licensing agreement expired. Same as all the other chemicals that have been withdrawn, can't buy or sell it, but if you have it in possession, it can be used until 2011 iirc.

Was never really publicised, even the training examiner's didn't know about it.

Shame really, It was brilliant stuff, and a lot easier to apply than lumping spray tanks of liquid around.

studies have shown the banning of ddt was a mostake but was the first big victory for the greens, rachel carson in silent spring found the thinning of egg shells in pheasants in california and attributed it to DDT. hence it was banned in states then the world. its the most effective and safe pesticide out there, they reckon somewhere close to 20 million lives could have been saved due to malaria alone through the use of ddt.

she didn't publish that there was a natural occurance of thin egg shells in birds never exposed to ddt, i've read quiet abit about it haha, some studies have had humans eating neat ddt powder everyday with no side effects.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Spring

Carson didn't seem to take into account the vital role (DDT) played in controlling the transmission of malaria by killing the mosquitoes that carry the parasite (...) It is the single most effective agent ever developed for saving human life (...) Rachel Carson is a warning to us all of the dangers of neglecting the evidence-based approach and the need to weight potential risk against benefit: it can be argued that the anti-DDT campaign she inspired was responsible for almost as many deaths as some of the worst dictators of the last century.

spreading the knowledge :)

nice work giles
its like the global warming thing
i could do with things a little warmer, plus TBH from looking at the evidence I cant see any compelling evidence other than a standard deviation in temperatures that fluctuates over a few thousand years
but the do what i say brigade love it,go round scratching 4 by 4's etc
I wonder what the figures are for emissions from that volcano in Iceland as opposed to all the 4 by4's ever driven??

on the other hand the oil-spill in the gulf is looking like a total fail, they dont seem to have the slightest idea how to stop it
