We had a slate patio laid a few months ago (it was cold when they laid it but not 'freezing'). The contractor laid the slate flags (approx 25mm thick and approx 40sq mtrs) on a dry sand cement mix. Since then (almost within a few days) many of the flags have come loose, they sound hollow and some move when we walk on them. they have fixed one or two but the same thing has happened again. They have agreed to come back and fix them but I would like to know what the best way to re-lay/fix the flags is. We have not paid in full, so they will come back to re do the job, but I want it doing correctly. Can anyone give me some advice on the best 'base mix' to use when laying slate. Thank you. PS. The slate is slightly riven & smooth and was laid with very little gap between the flags for asthetic reasons (3mm gap max around each flag max).

you really need a moist mix for slate and a bond bridge to hold them all together i would say they need to be relayed as the jointing wont hold them down not the news you want to hear if you search this site ie laying slate .then bond bridge will give you some idea what should have been done good luck cookie :;): :;): am sure if you cant find the links one of our boys will highlight them ???
