I am laying a patio - clay soil, a base of decomposed granite (not sure what it is called in the UK), and 2.25 inch (50mm?) "Hadrian" limestone slabs, cut rectangular one meter by 1.5 meters, roughly. We want more of a flagstone look so we are going to break up the slabs (sad I know, they are nice looking as they are). We have tried a couple of ways but end up with smaller pieces than we want. Ideally I would like to break them in to fourths, roughly. We have, thus far, ended up with 8-10 or more pieces.
Is there an easier way to ensure a more uniform break? Four corners raised 2 inches with a weight drop in the middle? I do not have a sledge hammer.
Thanks for any advise.
