Hi all,

I am new to this site so hope there will be some advice available.

We live in an old (1890) semi detached house with a kitchen extension that pokes out from the back which is quite long. Directly to the side is what could be a nice patio area - currently it is concrete which my neighbour informs me is about 30 odd years old. It has some cracks in it but they are not wide and have not moved in the 4 years we have been here.

The concrete goes all the way to the walls of the house. Should I start my patio laying on top of this or should I get rid of the concrete - which is over 8cm deep.

The DPC on the house looks quite high with at leat 2 bricks underneath it.......

Also - in this case would I just use sharp sand and concrete for the laying of the tiles - which I envisage will be normal run of the mill paving stones.

Thanks for the help - my husband is rubbish at any form of DIY and I decided to investigate myself...

Thanks, Holly

you will need at least 2 bricks below the finished height of your new patios top
also see here for more details of overlaying
I would be surprised if the concrete is 8 inches thick throughout
a picture would be handy
