Taking up crazy paving to lay a lawn

Foul and surface water, private drains and public sewers, land drains and soakaways, filter drains and any other ways of getting rid of water.

We've had the bright idea of taking up some of the crazy paving that covers our entire back garden to make a small lawn. The paving slabs, concrete and stones beneath are just over a foot deep and having broken it all up, we're now shovelling it all into a skip. We are wondering whether we should leave a single layer of stones at the bottom to help with drainage (and also so we wouldn't have to buy quite as much top-soil). If anyone has any advice, we'd really appreciate it!
Many thanks,
back to the shovelling!

as long as you end up with 225mm of top soil you should be ok
its not ideal but then nothing in life normally is
make sure its not contaminated sarah
and make sure its just stones
cheers
