Hello all, I've been getting quotes for a new patio which is about 9mx3.5m, then a path 1mx5m down the side of the house. One builder has sent me a quote and broken everything down and it seems a lot....9 tonnes of hardcore, 3 tonnes of sand and 30 bags of cement for a job that size. Is this about right? 9 tonnes sounds an awful lot! then to build a wall 10m long by a metre high (blocks below ground, brick above), another 24 bags of cement, 2 tonnes ballast (randomly...?maybe he meant that to go in the patio quote?). and indian stone at £19.40 m2. really good detailed quote n' all that, but does it sound about right for the quantities of materials? any help much appreciated :( ???

your patio and path is approx 36m2

9 ton will cover approx 36m2 at 120mm deep

3 ton of sand and cement will cover approx 36m2 at 40mm deep

so this amount is correct if he is digging off a total depth of about 180mm taking into account the 25 - 30 for the Indian stone flags

30 bags at 25kg per bag = 750kg
3 bulk bags of sand at 880kg per bag = 2640kg
this is just over a 4:1 mix which is correct

has he given you a total price for the job or broken down everything including the amount of labour he is charging you too ?

I can't pass comment on the cost of Indian stone as this varies in price where ever you are in the country and also the amount of stone you purchase too, the more you purchase the better the rate per m2

Sounds good ,perhaps a bit heavy on the cement for the flag laying as you only really need a 6:1 mix with sharp sand.

so I'd say more like 21 bags or 7 bags per tonne 21 X 25 = 525 , 3000kg divided by 525kg = 5.7 or 5.7 to 1 , (6:1)

i`m not a pro mate so cant really comment on the costs etc but if the man has broken the price right down and offered you the chance to see his finished works etc, he knows what he is doing and will only want to leave a good job behind him when he`s finished.
the old adage is true: you do 1000 perfect jobs and then one bad one. people only remember the one you messed up on. ???
