having anew house i want to build one of these in the garden

Image

questions:

refactory cement for the mortar?

what brick to use, should i use fire bricks and how to go about it use a ply form to get the dome shape?

going to use a large yorkstone flag for base or 2 to actually cook on

these boys use a form, and brick base wonder if the bricks keep the heat better?

well boyos don't use york stone for base the heat you will generate will make it explode very dangerous as bad or worse than the exploding paint marker.use new fire bricks 2mm to3mm joints useing firecement the mix your own not little tubs.build your bottom first then make a dome with sand lay fire bricks tight joints you can cut bricks for them to wedge together.then you can lay your reclaimed bricks over the topps take out sand. use some coal for the first fire as this seals it all up. smaller version that one in the picture would feed a hundred cookies :D :D or maybe fifty :p when i was a youngster worked in a refractory relining a kiln had to leave you would not be leave the heat 30mins on 1hour of it was like being slow roasted :p

thanks lads, yeah the fire is in the back corner and the pizza or roast just sits on the stone/brick base and cooks away and you get the lovely crisp base,

and tony i'm in the posh bit now haha, although it is a smoke free zone but the old dear across the rd still has a coal fire i can smell and see when she has it on.

so make a sand mould like if you where cating metal, good idea. i'll sit the firebricks on some council 60 then and face in a nice brick, i'm not making it as big as that one. summer here we come party and beers.

Giles, did you ever get around to building one of these?

Myself and my brother in law have just completed this one.

Image

Cast concrete base, blockwork walls, cast reinforced concrete top and then he bought a pizza oven dome kit off ebay which he then clad with the brickwork.

Had a party the other weekend which it proved to be a huge success.

i built a bog standard BBQ from brick in my own garden recently and use a 3 by 2 slab for the charcoal to sit on

cracked on very first go but is still there :(
the pizza ovens do look nice but i question how many times they would get used a year?
bit like the chiminea and firebasket that sit in my garage year in year out idle :;):
