Hi,

I want to build a small patio in front of my office. It is open to the public and will have a reasonable amount of foot traffic. I like the look of the marshall's heritage yorkstone slabs (38mm thick). I am a keen DIYer and have done some labouring in the past for landscaper - though after reading through this fantastic site it looks like he was a bit of a cowboy.

I want to make sure that there won't be any potential legal issues with the work I do, here is what I was planning:
Dig the ground out to ~200mm depth
Put down 100mm type 1 and plate it down
Lay the slabs on a 40mm full wet mix of 4:1 sharp sand:cement
Point with 4:1 building sand.

Does that seem reasonable?

Thanks,

Bob

Hi Bob

Base sounds good. As for the bedding course yes as long as you have the norm between 35-50mm. Not sure what you mean by the full wet mix. You really should be going for a semi dry mix and my preference is 3-1 but 4-1 is ok.
As for pointing, if funds are available you could go for romex which has a great finish and easy to use..

How big is the area you are working on :)

Thanks for the info irishpaving.

I meant a full bed of mortar rather than 5 dot method.

The area isn't that big, 6mx4m. When I was labouring i got all the rubbish jobs like pointing, because of that and it being a relatively small area I was just going to do it by hand.

The reason I was going to use a wet mix is because of
This info on the Laying flags: bedding mixes page

For commercial flag paving (paving in public areas) and for paving that will be subject to vehicular overrun (including driveways), the strength of the bond formed between bed and flag, and between the bed and the substrate, is often the most important factor

would that be unnecessary though because my patio will only have foot traffic?

Bob.... deffo no 5 dot. What i'm on about is the bedding layer. You said " Lay the slabs on a 40mm full wet mix of 4:1 sharp sand:cement" Sounds like you are going to lay on really wet mortar

Sorry Bob just missed your other post....

Yeah no need for wet mix with your project. A semi dry mix is fine for foot traffic. Maybe go a little stronger with 3:1. If you can get a pic up be great... :)

Will go for 3:1 semi dry mix then. Thanks for the help. I will try and get a few pictures up.
