As you can see from the first photo, there's no going back now. I'm committed and it's scary stuff for a first timer.

However, I have already come across a problem to my initial plans.

There is an inspection cover on the driveway and this will be replaced by an inset cover. You can see from the photos of the inspection chamber, it is very close to my neighbour's drive, and the tape measure marks (as near as possible) the line of a new fence that will be put in.

Once the fence is erected, the plan is for an edging of small splay kerbs to be placed along the length of the fence. But there clearly is not enough space to fit a kerb between the fence and the inset cover.

Can a kerb be cut accurately with a block splitter to overlap into the inset cover in the same way as you would do with a paver? Or do I have to re-think my plans.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I'm sure that I will be back to ask many more questions as the project develops.

Cheers

Paul

a kerb can be cut very accurately with a 2 stroke brick saw but not with a block splitter

is the fence going to be constructed with concrete posts and base panels or just timber posts and panels ?

Yes, the fence will be constructed using concrete posts and base panels.

I suppose to stop stray children & pensioners climbing over my rubble I should cordon things off. The open inspection chamber was re-covered using a 3 x 2 paving slab after the photo was taken.

I'm hiring a digger & skips on Saturday to clear and excavate the area so all that rubble will go. It will then leave a new open trench for the footings of the new wall, and soakway/drainage channels.

Can cheap barriers be bought from B&Q etc ?

I think you would be better off trying your local builders merchant. Even if you get a few steel fencing pins (which will come in handy) and a bit of barrier tape will do the trick.
I only say it for your protection cos you are liable if anyone trips off the edge of footpath.

Once you've cleared the are you will have a nice work area.

Keep us posted :)

I went for the orange barrier fence and lantern/fencing pins during the two and a half years it took me to do my drive, stopped the old dears and drunks falling in!

you have to be careful you don't bang a pin through buried services. You need to keep your manhole opening a minimum 600x600.

as you know mick it is a manhole not an inspection chamber. Need 600x600 to climb in and out for maintenance work to be carried out. Have you tried getting in and out of 450? Not easy a ???
