No problems here. Use the same user name and password then it will tell you that password has to be reset. Put in the email you registered with and a new password will be in the email sent to you.

Google adsence is present because it uses adverts on the pages which is completely normal which boosts the site to top of search lists.

I think there looks like theres a lot more text etc but i think this is due to a change in the size and font type

its showing the BOT as a registered user, its got nothing to do with the ads on the page

Technically, GoogleBot *is* a registered user, as the new software tracks which bots are indexing the forums and the only way it can track them is if they are registered. GoogleBot reads the pots and then feeds in allegedly appropriate adverts that are supposed to pay for the site running costs and prevent me going bankrupt.

When the new BC goes live, these bots will be hidden, but for now, while I'm testing, I need to know which bots are putting in an appearance.

The password thingy remains a Mister E. I'll see if Ian knows why the copied database won't acknowledge passwords/cookies from the original database.

Well, it's gone through one conversion and one upgrade - in the past, with different forum software, the password storing mechanism has been changed which means any authentication tokens would be null and void (limits the chances of passwords being hacked).

If all it's asking for is a password reset via email then I'd say the conversion process was a reasonable success.

The only other fly in the ointment is the fact that we'll have to do it all over again when we convert the BrewCabin for real ...

Not sure what the deal with the email hold up is - unless it requires an admin to authorise requests

What I remember from assisting in going from IPB to a vBulletin board, the passwords are stored as salted hashes or similar, so can’t really be exported across – well, not in a form that can be used.



Hence the need to use what info can be exported and used, namely the username & email.

The database can’t use the password info thats been exported across, but has a list of usernames & emails it can access - so when someone requests a password reset, then it forwards that to the associated email address that that user has access to.





It can use username and email but not passwords, and as the email is the one previously associated with a username, then the reset feature is somewhat secure – because anyone chancing their arm and using someone else’s username to request a reset, would still need access to their associate email account, in order to complete / confirm the reset.

You exceeded the maximum allowed number of login attempts. In addition to your username and password you now also have to enter the confirm code from the image you see below.

i cant get past this,tried asking for a email but says i'm all ready active thats as far as it goes,? any ideas ian? MSH

It sounds like vBulletin forum, which gives you so many attempts at incorrect login details and then has a safety feature for those trying various combinations or a brute force attack.<span style='font-size:10pt;line-height:100%'>*</span>






In the first instance, did you use the password reset feature to gain the login details, or just soldier on trying to log in with your username & password you use on this forum software.


Because if it was the latter, then the new forum will only be able to see and use your username and email from upon here and any password you used will have failed – you may have well wrote any old random nonsense as your password, as it wouldn’t work until after the reset.




As to the already registered message, make sure you are using the password reset feature and don’t just attempt to create a new account – as that message is usually after someone attempts to create another account with the same email, as it can see that the email is already in use <span style='font-size:10pt;line-height:100%'>*</span>



Just remember though, that even though you reset your password for that forum, the pass for this forum here will be the same – as they are two separate places / databases.


And the password reset doesn’t mean it will reset your password to automatically convert back to what it is or was, it will email a confirmation link and new password to the email account you have registered to the account.



<span style='font-size:10pt;line-height:100%'>*</span> in regards administrators upon vBulletin forum software, you will have to routinely change your password and set periods as well, and there’s no real escaping from that as it will prompt you to do that.


<span style='font-size:10pt;line-height:100%'>*</span>If it is a vBulletin forum then there’s also some other handy features or extras for controlling those that try to create multiple accounts, but I wont mention them upon an open forum.

e-e - it's phpBB, but many of the points you make are valid.

There *is* an option to force mods to change their password on a regular basis, but as the BC has, thankfully, always been a steady and friendly sort of place, I can't see any real need for that.

Those experiencing password or access difficulties at the mo' would do well to heed e-e's comments about RE-SETTING the password rather than creating a new one. Remember this is a *trial*, so when the official new Brew Cabin is launched, you'll have to go through it all again.

As ever, Ian is right about the database: because I didn't do it (technical incompetence). I'd forgotten that the database had to be converted which could be the reason for what have to be considered minor glitches, given the number of posts, members, replies and all the rest that are involved. So the new database is not, as I mistakenly said, a direct copy of this one, but a conversion, a bit like DNA replication but probably more reliable.

So, once again, any of the regulars wanting a nosey in the new BC, PM me using the button at the foot of this post
