Crumbling pointing

Patio flagstones (slabs), concrete flags, stone flags including yorkstone and imported flagstones.

I suspect it was quite a lot of salt - enough to clear the snow away.
I have told the clients that there isn't anything I can do to touch it up as a layer of mortar a few mm thick will be purely cosmetic and won't last for long. Apart from completly chiseling out the old pointing does anyone have an alternative to repair the pointing?

i reckon you answered your own question there, id chisel the blown stuff out an re-point, cant think of another way round it tbh.

Like you say a few mm wont last 5 minutes!

personally I would grind it rather than use a hammer and chisel so you don't chip the edge of the flags
