i would say from experience to only buy something with a "named" engine on it. i bought a screener a few years ago with a "yanmar type" engine..... got through 2 engines in 6 months, then put proper yanmar in it, totally different machine. thinh the crap engines were made by "Kippor"??

mr central crushers you got a website, if we get the job we'll the knocking down a 5 bed bungalow in hale barns cheshire and more than likely crushing most the stuff and stock pilling on site, be looking to load with a 16 or 13 ton machine?

got an mbw plate £340 plus vat brand new very good with honda engine on it;
did have a cheap jap named diesel one but had a lot of trouble with it and couldnt get parts was told yanmar copy just get yanmar parts spent money on parts that didnt fit

Will that plate isn't worth the money it's another chinese job all the plates labelled C40 -60-90 etc are. Think of it this way if you buy one of those you'll be out £200 when you re-sell then you'll have to shell out a further £300-£400 for a decent second hand yoke which becomes £500 - £600. Thats a no brainer buy a really good one now and save yourself some money because if you buy cheap you buy twice. Brands to look for are Wacker Bomag MBW Belle and Mikassa. All those machines described as wackers on ebay are not it's become a common name for a type of machine like hilti and stihl has for drils and saws. A wacker says wacker on the front of it. Sorry for the buy cheap buy twice cliche that rally stinks I know. Brand new MBW's are good value for money although I'm not a fan of where they mount the handle or how sharp the side of the sole is.

any ideas how much i should be looking at spending then? ideally it will pay for itself on the first couple of jobs but still its a big outlay espechially over winter, trouble is i want it for some home jobs soon as well as for work, even managed to rent it to the old man as well

£300-£400 will get you one that will last for years. Second hand of course.

in my opinion what's more important is the compaction rate rather than the price, I paid £780 15 years ago for a MBW vibrating plate whats still going strong to this day, that works out at £52 per year, in my eyes its one of the best items I have ever purchased

you can pay £300 for a small vibrating plate and it be as much use as a chocolate fire guard in terms of compacting the ground and reliability but then again it could be the best thing you ever buy if thats what your happy with

if you're really as indecisive as you seem and worrying about it so much hire different compaction plates for the jobs you've got and see how you find them, or go to your loacal independent hire yard and try them out they normally carry a variety of weights and brands of them.

you'll need to decide if you can lift it on your own etc or 2 man lift?

we run mainly bomag and wackers and tiny belle. belle is about 18kg biggest bomag is about 120kg its forklift onto wagon job,

I don't know will's personal circumstances ,but I cant see the problem with buying a cheap one in the interim if thats all finances allow
regarding wacking, I kind of know when it is wacked as the surface has no voids in it,all the fines have been brought to the surface
we tried a roller on subbase a couple of times but found it rutted it and was a pain in the behind
A lot of tools are getting cheaper now,but i still prefer named brands,my hilti drill cost £450 8 years ago but is good as new, bosch and black and decker seem to die annually

I personally prefer Belle equipment, all my stuff is Belle; wackers, pokers, generators pumps etc, and alot of it has been bought of ebay. I bought a small belle pclx 320 plate of ebay for £300.00 and it had hardly done anything.

I think somthing this size would be perfect for what you intend to do with it.

see there's a difference of opinion as I hired a belle 3 months ago as a tester to buy one, it was the biggest load of rubbish I have ever used, the compaction was rubbish and the speed was a waste of time compared to what i have been used too with my MBW vibrating plate

so like Luton says hire a few different vibrating plates and you purchase what you feel is the correct item
