you've not seen me drive one then haha, no it was more in reference to knocking the pitch off
when we cobbled our drive a good 18 years ago, i'd guess its about 600m2 we had wagons running in from all the high ways lads on an offer of free tipping if it was from a cobbled road they were stripping, some took piss and might be 5 cobbles in a 20 ton load. took us over 3 years of collecting here and there and sorting through a good couple of thousand tons of crap to get enough to do it. they are the big sandstone duck stones i think you call them,
knowing what i know now the lads who did it for my dad it id wrong. the joints are like 20-50mm and they were pointed with a slurry made with a white sharp sand that brick acid wouldn't touch the staining. had to have the whole drive sand blasted afterwards.
but me and my two mates from the next farm spent alot of time sorting through the pile, machine guy digging through in an old hymac us on 20p a cobble we pulled out. we were only about 10 or 12 haha.

it was 18 odd years ago we had blacktop before, like i say if i knew what i did now haha, an old irish guy did all the dry stone walls in his 70's he was. they've never shifted or moved, been rubbed by a few trucks and tractors etc and most are retaining walls with no concrete backing or rebar realy nice job.cookiewales wrote:there sandstone setts just not laid up to our standard but hey have seen alot worse and they dont look to bad they just needed to tighten the line and follow it that was good pocket money and got ya fit and tired :p
the 'cobblers' were 3 youngish lads on day rate as my dad had prepped it all etc. they hold up well though 40 ton trucks, 20 ton tracked diggers go across them etc.
my dads planning on knocking the family home down and rebuilding it so i guess they might come up then and be relaid. haha
