I wonder if you could help me. I’m in the process of laying a patio(40m² 10x4) I’m an absolute novice to laying paving slabs, but have enlisted the help of my father in law who can turn his hand to anything. He tells me we should be laying the slabs on a bed consisting of solely sharp sand, cement mix and water. Having researched on your site you recommend 6 parts gravel 4 parts sand and 1 part cement with no actual water. We are laying natural indian sandstone slabs.

Thanks
John

And also on the page devoted to laying Indian sandstone flags...

... you should be laying these flags on a 35-50mm bed of grit sand with 10% cement and no additional water. If you want to use a wet mix, then do so, but get your handy Father-in-Law to promise to clean up any mess when you're finished.
