Landscaping question - Alternative to decking

I have a patio dilema. We're in the process of having an extension put on the back of the house and because the garden slopes away there will be a drop of about 18" when you open the rear patio doors. I imagine to backfill this to provide a level patio when you come out of the doors will be financially crippling (my ideal patio will be 8 x 3m approx). The obvious answer would be decking but I hate it! Is it possible to do a decking sort of structure and tile onto that. I know that ordinary tiles wouldn't work but I know they produce one in the US that is an interlocking granite topped one called Ezytile but you can't get it in the UK. Any ideas?

you could do a retaining wall in concrete blocks then fill the void with type 1 crushed concrete wacked in 100 mm levels, 8 m by 3 m by say 400mm fill , give 9.6 M3 roughly 20 tonne which would cost around £250 for crushed
decking is a HUGE fail IMHO in the uk

I wouldn't say decking is a huge fail, I think home owners need to really think about the wood and products they buy or put on their decking.
Decking is just like paving, be it sandstone, limestone etc it does need some maintanance ie cleaning/oiling each year.

roger i know that its a good earner for you m8,and that is my point, decking always looks great when new or just refurbed,but the rest of the time it just seems to be green and slimy
IMHO
the money you save on slabs is soon eaten up by maintenance
