I have read the info on the site about paving over concrete and know what to do but my question is, what about laying a patio and path over concrete that is cracked places? A contractor said that it would be too expensive to remove the concrete and difficult with the drains below but if you can give some advice then my husband and I will give this a go ourselves.

It would be best practice to start again but if the cracks are only minor and overlaying the concrete won't breach your DPC then it may be ok. With regards drains etc any decent contrator should have no problem dealing with them but the chances are they are deeper than the subbase. Check that overlaying won't leave you with an unsightly exposed edge they tend not to look to good if you don't pay attention to the finishing touches.
Can't see it from my house
