I dont know how anyone else is fairing but I am starting to worry about the coming winter and how to keep money coming in.
Phone has stopped ringing and the job I went to start yesterday was cancelled on me due to client being worried about his job. Only got told in afternoon after I had turned up i the morning and client was not ready for us to start. ( I was supposed to be starting groundwork for an extension for main contractor) and as we had all been away prior to job starting client only told main contractor yesterday afternoon. Totally pi@#ed off.

I have now brought the only confirmed job I have forward and dont know what I will do when that one is finished.

Any advice welcolme.

Me to pal, ive got two weeks left, ive recentley tendered for some LA contract work, the price really was tight but i dont think ive got that, But to be honest its been like this all year, somtimes dont know what ill be doing from one week to the next.

Just muddle through it somehow!

I've managed to pull in a few small jobs using those quote sites online. Jobs are not huge but can help to tic over untill something decent comes along

But if anyone knows of anything going in Milton Keynes area i could do with knowing..

i know with local authority stuff DN that its best to price it as tight as a nun's.
the PC sums they give you for extras unforeseen by themselves are where you make money.
I am sure we got £250 to install 1 BIG onto an existing run on a school job
the initial price has to go to tender though, and they have to accept the cheapest one.

its worth getting on their list as they have a budget that has to be spent every year

priced a doctors surgery extension for a builder i have worked for before

came in at about £30k upto dpc with all underground drainage etc builder rang me up saying i needed to be cheaper. only had a 4% margin on it, so cut it down as best i could. got it down to £28k hoping muck away can go to our yard etc. be working for just wages.

but a guy rang me today about 2 x 5 bed double garaged houses so fingers crossed haha

i'd rather not work than be chiselled away at giles, if the price in the first instance is fair, why would there be room to drop it?
he will probably go back to the other ppl and say GB can do for 28k can you do it for 26k?

thats when fly tipping starts etc

I would rather be known for doing professional work on budget and on time

one of our competitors used to phone round everyone who gave a price and asked them to cut it down, usual statement was: we really want to work with you again, but there cheaper, as soon as someone bit he would tell their price to the next guy and auction off to the biggest fool.

If that's your price, stick to it. you have your overheads/margin, stick to these if you dont you`ll be used and abused. ???

still money in it, but the builder is competing against other builders and he was way over on what he'd priced.

the price i give is the price i charge(for the spec), lots get on and start adding everything as extras even silly little stuff.

as long as your not losing money, and its better than paying the lads wages myself.

a m8 of my auld fella said to me years ago "dont be a busy fool younglagerlout)
only now do i get what he meant :;):
i know we started missing the boat on loft conversions,so we looked at what was going wrong cost wise
the Tinhat (temporary roof)@ 6 grand lost us a few (use tarps now)
also it transpired chipies were earning around £250 a day on price work,they are now on £150 a day daywork and the work is still getting done.

the days of the big £££ are over for now,but why take on big jobs for wages alone,not worth the aggro

Got potted off a job today by a wakner of a site agent. 1/2 days notice! Hes got his old machine driver back Tuesday, a Pole who by all accounts, hasn't got a permit to work in building(should be catering or farms).

Off to do drainage next week in Warwick. better craic and wont have to stop myself from launching the agent every five minutes.

everyone likes to slag off the poles. truth be told: 95% are a bunch of chancers who just blag it. the 5% who know what there doing take a bit of pride. these lads are only doing what i did: chase the money, spent over a year in luton,i`ve only ever seen london in the dark. i was 21 at the time, made my money, bought a flat and left.

No slagging off here, just when there's a recession on, and the government say 'you can only work here,here and here' do the contractors still employ them?

There's is a reason to issue a limited working visa.

Ive got no truck with the Poles, its when the rules are not abided by, by the people who should know better.
