Labour costs for this job?

I know this will vary massivley depending on who is doig git..but..

I want an area of my garden (45sq metres) indian sandstoned.

I have done most of the hard work, bashed up the ground, gotten rid of all the rubbish, bought the grit sand, type 1 and slabs.

if i just wanted to pay for someones labour to lay the actual paving how much would i be looking at?

initally i got quotes of about 1k materials and 1k labour - usually this was for 3/4 days work.

I am guessing the laying will now only take 1/2 days because they just have to level the type 1 and whack and then lay the slabs.


do contractors normally go for this or do they like to supply as well (do they make money out of materials as well?) or am i just making it much easier for them?

Labour only £500-£700 +vat if registered etc. Any serious prepwork or any waste disposal will be extra. This is a ballpark check previous work and speak to clients there's too many idiots in the patio game.

I estimate Indian stone at 20 sq.m/day allowing for cuts, gulleys, etc. with one guy laying and one labouring. 45 sq.m is therefore roughly 2 days x 2 guys + 1/2 day to point and tidy up. 45 sq.m is typically 150 or so slabs: a lot even for 2 days.

Do you have your own tools (mixer, disc cutter, trowels, shovels, spades, levels, etc.) or do you need the people to have their own?

Also do you have a wacker on site?

Last question, when you say 'level' the MOT, is it all in the right places and just needs a rake and compaction, or do the levels and lines need to be sorted (a much longer job!)

I'm with Pablo but at the upper end and maybe a quid or two more.

No I am down south.

As I have done a lot of the hardwork I was hoping that the more skilled bit might have been doable by a pro in a day or 2. but that sounds like a lot of money for 2 guys over 2 days - i'll just have to have a crack myself i spose if the quotes i get are too high

the Type 1 is on the lawn, they will need to put it on and whack it in place

on average you will lay between 15m2 - 20m2 done correctly so thats 3 days laying, half a day to move and level the MOT and half a day to point it all with romex, if its pointed with sand and cement it would take all day on your hands and knees.

I have rounded it up to half a day because I don't get out of bed, travel 10 - 15 miles and work for 2 hours money, its half a day minimum.

so you have not done all of the hard work you have done a lot of the donkey work, the next bit of getting the levels right and the laying of the indian stone is what your paying your money for as this is the bit what you see as the finished result and it will either be the best patio in the world or a bag of shite and your wife will hate you for the rest of your life :;):

so what you have to work out is the time and inconvenience you are going to endure and could you of earned the same or more money in your own profession than if you construct your own patio taking into consideration its going to take you a lot longer than a skilled craftsman and even more cost in having to hire or even purchase all the right equipment

So you think around £250 a day for 2 men is too much money??

What about when you take your car to the garage for repairs/MOT and they charge you around £38 per Hour -- 8hr day = £304 for 1 man.

I paid £480 (no vat) and got two brickies and a labourer for one day.
The job they done was all labour, no materials were supplied and minimal movement of materials was required as they had been moved to the work area ready to go.
They used my cement mixer so turned up in a car armed only with trowels and levels.
The labourer was half pissed all day so I reckon the brickies took £200 each and gave the labourer £80.
I know it's not exactly the same as laying paving but it gives an idea of what labour costs in London.
Not that they needed to bring such as things as Wackers but if they had needed machinery I'm sure it would've cost more.


As for cars my brother in law who works in a Vauxhall dealership says that labour is £100 an hour.
Perhaps he was kidding but it wouldn't surprise me!

car garages take the living , round here its £60 an hour

i did a patio for a member of the brew cabin recently and i charged him £20 per hour, for me stihl saw and PPE

which i thought was fair

he knocked up and i laid and we did the 40 -45 m2 of injun stone in a day and 3/4

then it was a mornings work for him to romex the lot

you may or may not have done the hard work mo
but if your levels aren't spot on then i would walk away,

That's a strange quote.
What if he completes the job in 2 days, does he still charge £800?
Or is he doing 2hours a day for 7 days after he finishes his day job?

its unlikely he will finish it in 2 days though - i can easily see it taking 5 or 6 full days for a decent job i guess,

its not much different from 2 guys taking 2.5 days TBF.

i asked for a fixed price - we discussed per day fees but i dont wanna have a job that ends up taking 12 days and costing more.
