Sub base - New mot versus recycled mot

hi guys ive had a few prices for mot 1 for 20 tonnes new £316 and for 20 tonnes recycled £160.

is the recycled adequate for what i need or will it cause me problems?

Recycled is fine i use it on most domestic works, never had any problems.

We stopped using recycled about 2 yrs ago, we suffered a spat of rutting which cost us a few quid, it seemed to be most prevelant on the tarmac jobs.

Go for the real deal, we currently pay 11.15 per ton for 2o ton loads

Type 1 subbase is a specification, so be it limestone, gritstone or recycled it 'should' perform the same (if bought from a quality supplier). the bad rep may be from the cowboys who reprocess any old sh*te rather than sourcing good quality materials. plus the sight of a piece of wood in there may put folk off.

generally for smaller works limestone is easier to compact, which make it popular

Crush is very dusty and has ALOT of fines in it. You can 'get away' with it, but mot is the best for consistency. If it was me, I'd swallow the extra just for piece of mind

depends on the source. One supplier round here buys the "sweepings" from the crushing plant dirt cheap, and then uses the sweepeings from his yard to add to it and sells it as crushed. needless to say, its crap, but there are some reputable suppliers of graded crushed concrete (inc me!! :p ).

as for recylced, BEWARE! round here, a local skip company sells it , but when it turns up it's Road planings! there is one so called builder (does everythng, jack of all trades master of none) that uses road planings as oversite on the extensions. How the building inspector passes it i will never know!

i always use recycled mot never had any trouble with it but i produce it myself local skip companies sell absolute crap for £12 a ton and its full of soil

We used our own recycled subase material - in addition to our 6F2 roadstone.

We did a HQ for Peugeot, the use this crappy crush. When it rained, it turned into porrige
Then the contracts manager (ex engineer) decided to dig foundations in this 'made up' ground for a large steel framed shed,instead of piling.
Each foundation swallowed up 30 cube (had to be that big before they hit clay). Left the founds for a week, came back and measured ,they'd sunk my 20mm! Quick call to Roger B, and it was back to the original plan :laugh: :laugh:
I didn't mean all crush is crap, but in my experience,is poor enough to just use MOT. You have to be careful as the reasoning seems to be' if they will have crush, they will have any only crap' :;):

how much do you lads pay for typre 1 per ton if you are NOT ordering 20 ton lorry loads

Too many people adopt the attitude "Will it crush?" - if yes, then stick it through the crusher - this includes wood, fibreglass etc etc etc and not just broken concrete.

This is the kind of attitude that gives the whole recycled aggregates game a bad name. Granted, the odd bit of rebar and membrane is bound to get through, but lumps of wood etc.....come on!!!
