where the paving butts a wall there is no need for edging as the wall is an abutment as such ,only free edges need retaining

That's exactly what I needed to know and a great help - thanks! I'm so impressed with this site that I've ordered the book. Hopefully I can correct all my errors from twelve years ago, I'll need some advice on sealants when it's all done but I'll park that one for now. Let's just get the bloody things laid first!
