in the right aplication a dumpy level is great, but it needs 2 people to use and some one who knows maths to subtract and add figures to get correct readings, site enginers use them all the time but they have be overtaken on a lot off jobs by lasers for speed and simple use, laser is a 1 man tool dumpy is 2 men everytime MSH

We use a dumpy level, we don't have the use for one all the time so the good old manual one is great for us.
A laser level in the right circumstances will run rings round a dumpy level though!

most rotating laser have the option to not spin and just send out a straight laser line then match your building upto that. otherwise your looking at a total station. they can cost in excess of 20k though, point it at a point and works it all out inc the angle for accurate measuring but easier to get survey company in charge about £250 to mark a building out.

Iv got 2 grade lasers a single grade topcon RLH1SA and a spectra manual duel grade ll400
topcon is great just enter the grade% required set the reciver and off you go, great on driveways ,yards etc. i use it for digging pipe trenches to falls, the manual grade LL400 is great to match 2 points when digging out drive ways such as garage floor down to roadway the topcon does manual work as well would not be without one

yeah i saw that, its very nice and i'd like one but think the mrs would go spare if i spent 2k+ on a laser haha she wants to go to australia
i'll keep my eye out up this way for a striker seems to be a lot more gear knocking around than last year.
on a side note turned up on site this morning and our cottage we are working at had been broken into, just lifted the sliding patio door off. didn't get owt as we had stripped the place out just the hassle of repairing double glazed unit.
think thieving will also increase as hard times keep biting.
