Launch of world of paving, the industry event - The uk's first event dedicated to paving

Today is the official launch of what will become the industry event, World of Paving. It's located at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry on February 10th and 11th, 2010 and we are placing specific emphasis on installer / contractors.

In addition to all that's best in the paving industry under one roof, there will be demos, toolbox talks on a wide range of paving-related subjects, seminars for contractors on such things as legal apsects of paving, accounts and VAT queries (sorry!) and there will also be a chance to win a prestigious World of Paving Project of the Year in 4 categories including Block Paving, Natural Stone, Decorative Concrete and a general category to include safety paving, resin bonded overlays, etc.).

The show is being supported by none other than our genial host in the Brew Cabin, the Paving Expert himself, Tony McComack, who will also have a stand at the show so if the chance to see all of the above or maybe win an industry award is not sufficient attraction in itself, surely the chance to shake Tony's hand is the clinching reason for being in Coventry on the 10th and 11th of February next year!

We also want your ideas as to what else you would like to see and hear - it'll be your show so post them here to get some debate going.

I don't sell anything, I don't manufacture anything, so I've nowt to show! I have a couple of proto-ideas but if anyone can come up with a really good idea, I'd be only too willing to listen.

More news on this event over the weekend, after I recover from my trip to the Brett plant at Barrow-on-Soar (more on that, too!)

I agree with Giles that you should include something about training as there is a lack of relevant courses and information when ever I try to further my knowledge in anything. For example resin bound, Permeable block paving or even rainwater harvesting systems

Nice big LCD/Plasma screen displaying the paving expert website & couple of PC's for people to surf it while you are dealing with the queues of people buying your book. Could also sell advertising space on you LCD for other peoples stands.!!

Great idea about having the site available at the show on a big telly, and following a discussion by email over the weekend, I'm fairly certain there *will* be a significant and relevant input of H&S topics. It's something both I and the main organiser are very keen to promote.

Thanks for your feedback gents, please, don't be shy, keep them coming, it's going to be your show so we want to give you what you want.

I'm really pleased to see health and safety and training get early postings - I was mentioning to Tony just the other day that these are tricky subjects in our industry : so often it's been the fashion to be the man of iron who knows it all - "gloves? don't need 'em, mate" - "training - nah, been in the game for 35 years..." Dust mask? "You avin' a larf" (I'm from London....).

The fact is that are a lot of very tough, very knowledgable people in the paving industry but there is a flip side to this and when you hear some of the stats it's quite shocking and this needs to change.

On a more cheerful note, a very amusing line from a post the other day, sorry, can't quite remember who posted, maybe MSH or LLL, talked about using a carpet on a plate, and an "epic failure". It made me smile and got me thinking - we are having Project of the year awards at WOP, why can't we have a tongue in cheek award for the most epic balls up?
