I made some of my best buys during the previous recessions! It's always worth spending half a day at a plant sale if you've nowt else on. I bought a plate compactor at a sale in Chorley 20-odd years ago for just 20 quid. It's *still* running now, and the only servicing it's ever had would be fresh oil, fuel and air filters.

The last recession was very hard on us, [we are still paying for the effects of it] we lost some very useful items of plant back then.

With sterling as low as it is, a lot of the secondhand kit is heading overseas - Eastern Europe in particular.
It is very sad but, if you look at the data from Off Highway Research, new plant sales accross Europe between 2004 and 2007 were some 25% to 30% above the ten year average. I'd guess the UK must surely have been at the vanguard of this - totally unsustainable.
There were quite a few companies, contractors as well as hireres, who thought that (with 'clever' finance) they'd found a way never to have to put a spanner to a machine on their fleet. Non name, no pack drill...

the other things is get the farmers guardian on a friday that has listing of auctions at the front of the classified section wade through all the cattle auctions and you'll find a good number of plant and dispersal sales.
there is also burnley auctions but bit far from cumbria, i'd start with the farmers also dispersal sales up your way.
