Thanks Tony for replying to mail when i couldn't post, got it cracked now will call suppliers you recommended. Just wondered how do you finance this site? it is extremely well organised and set out as well as being very user friendly, also with the speed of your reply and the lengths to which you will go to help people it must take up a lot of your time. (I am not just being nosey I would add support if I could.)

I finance it from my own pocket and it takes up around 8-10 hours of each day. I spend a helluva lot of time answering the 'phone and responding to emails, so what you see of the site is just the tip of the iceberg that the site has become over the last 7 years.

I get some help from the manufacturers, such as our pal Simeon from Ronacrete, but no-one pays me to plug their products and I don't sell anything via the site, so I can be equally horrible to everyone. :)

Now that I'm disabled, I have the time to run the site, which I wouldn't if I was still contracting, and it allows me to keep my hand in with the industry I love, so it's a mutually beneficial arrangement: you lot get to share in my experiences and what bit of knowledge I have, and I get to feel that I've still got a role to play, even if I can't pick up a mall any longer! :)

PS - I've changed your status to "Contractor" - you might want to edit your Profile to give some contact info for your company.

Thanks for the prompt reply didn't know you were disabled (stop telling us it's because of how hard you woked though you're making me nervous Ha Ha) have changed the profile as advised. I will be sure to tell any companies who I deal with as a result of looking through your site where I got the info from (some cracking stuff especially liked the posts about mini-crushers never even heard of them before, are we rally so far behind up north?)
Anyway keep up the good work you have a new devoted follower.

Tony

"My pal Simeon". Sounds nice, thanks.

Dave is right; it's an excellent site and although you are reluctant to charge why not set up a "Click here to donate something to Tony/Tony's nominated charity/Tony's holiday slush fund".

If I was a user with an enquiry and I had got free help, I'd happily make a contribution.

This is a tremendous freebie for the industry to use to their advantage.

Thanks Tony.

Hear, hear Simeon.

When you read the posts you get the impression that most users of this site are decent folk who are genuinely pleased to be part of this little paving "community" (and I bet there are loads like me who still visit regularly even though the one-off DIY job has been finished for months - so addictive is Tony's passion for his trade and so well does he communicate it).

I bet that with some sort of "donate now" button, Tony would at least cover his website, telephone and computer costs and would probably never have to buy his own beer again.

All it needs is to jog everyone who's received advice in the forums into recognising that this is one the web's great information resources and, amazingly, its being provided free of charge by one bloke at home.

Perhaps you can persuade him, Simeon.

George

George

Maybe we could do a double act - although I don't think I could cope with a large one so early in the morning!

Let's start a subject / thread and see what people think; it's then up to Tony to decide if he wants to pursue it.

Great idea
I am in total agreement I already pay data base companies for info i would certainly pay a small donation if I received info that saved or made me more cash. Isn't that what we do already if a mate has helped us out, buy them a drink next time we see them.
Well next time i come on to site to "see" you Tony set us something up so we can all buy you a drink if we want the worst you could do is cover your electric bill, hope you are ok with this, just because you love what you do doesn't mean it should cost you. I for one would feel much happier asking all the questions which I post if I knew I could repay the help in some way, let us know what you would feel comfortable with.
Simeon I have posted a thread in the Craic pointing them this way as you suggested (hope thats ok) and asking them to leave their comments.
Hope something posotive comes from this
Cheers all Dave

Let's see how/if this gathers pace.

Beyond what we think it may well be a moral dilemma for Tony. However if we the readers/users/potential fee payers are prepared to pay/donate/contriute something at least we can let him know.

And yes I agree that some of the subjects are interesting to read even if not relevant to our business.

I'm really touched by all your kind thoughts.

As this section/forum of The Brew Cabin is supposed to be for Q&As about flags and slabs, I'll continue this thread in The Craic
