I have been looking at getting the front drive replaced with block paving but what other methods are available, how about second hand railway sleepers, has anyone else seen this or had this done?

In theory, you could build a driveway using sleepers. They'd need to be bedded onto concrete to stop them moving, but after about 6 months the problems will start.

Timber, even treated timber, shrinks and swells with moisture content, so that will destroy and bond between sleeper and bed. Then there's the slipperiness problem. Think about how many times you've seen decks in public areas covered with a wire mesh to prevent people slipping on the greasy surface.

Just because a particular structure is possible, doesn't mean it's a good idea!

Thanks for all your replies and given what I've seen I think it's a non starter.

Thanks again.
