Yorks stone slabs. help?

Patio will be foot traffic only, subsoil is clay, presuming it will require 75mm sub-base, due to irregular thickness other than five spotting (ouch), how should it be laid, also what mix to use, or mix for five spotting.

Having read the laying page, it looks like I have to lay and bed them individually the hard and slow way, do I need a sub-base for foot only use?, I have had a price of a local gardener odd job man, he wanted to spot/spit and use a mix with building sand, he will be getting a phone call shortly, I've decided to diy it, I'm so glad I found your website.

That's why he's a gardener/OddJobber - he'd never last long as a flagger!

A sub-base beneath patios and pathways is NOT essential, but is a good idea if you have iffy ground or need to build-up levels. Otherwise, just lay on 35-50mm of 10:1 GRIT sand with cement. :)
