Gravel drive - Manhole covers

I am in the process of laying a gravel drive using the instructions on the website. I am going to use 14mm granite. I have two manhole covers on the drive and was thinking of using the block paviour type ones and fill them with gravel so they would not show so much. Is this a good idea or should I stick with the old ones? One last question, how deep should I lay the granite?

not a good idea at all, leave the normal lids on,
the stone needs to be 30mm-40mm thick max other wise car will spin on it :;):

Generally there best left alone on gravel drives.But if you really want the lids to be less visible make sure you get someone to bed the frame on properly if you havent done it before yourself.Also be sure to get the shallow tray and not the deeper ones for paving.Two examples that we have used ourselves are Peter savage 3100 range and Durey castings DU1350 range.Ones 58mm deep and the other is 61mm.They are both AAA grade which is more than enough for a drive.Fill up with some desent muck (3/1)to around 50/55mm and press a shovel full of gravel into the muck with some loose ones on top to keep a uniform look with the rest of the drive.If there in a position where you have to drive over them make sure there filled properly so that the bare rims do not protrude an eat your tyres.Theres pages on this site that explain the procedure much more betterer than wot i can.My friends gravel drive has 3 manholes but he just painted them blue with a couple of gold fish on each one and they look ....umm....different shall we say.I wouldnt bother with it myself but its your home and your choice.Regards Nick.

Thanks for the info. The manhole covers are in the middle of the drive so are not likely to be driven over. What if I half filled them with MOT number 1 or similar and then just topped off with the granite?

Just replied to the first post and the found the second one had come in, which explains all. many thanks for the advice, looks like I am going to have to stick with the old ones.

You could buy a "normal" flush surface cover and coat it with Ronadeck Fast Grip Resin and granite aggregate (1-3mm).
