Tarmac/hot rolled surface - Trying to quote for a job

A question for dave L perhaps.

Quoting for a job at a church. Basically lifing and existing yorkstone path which is approx 1.1m wide, and relaying to 1.5m, slabs to edges, leaving the middle, wait for it.... for

"lay 50mm of 14mm close graded surface course tarma, blinded with sealing grit. return at a later date and surface dress with hot bitumen and 10mm washed golden gravel"

I don't do tarmacing, but want to sub this work out. is there a guide price for what this type of work will cost per sq m?

one amusing thing on the spec, is to dig out 150mm. but lay 10mm mot type one. I think she means 100mm?!!

or am i being stupid and there is such a thing as 10mm type one?

if i was you dan i would let a tarmac guy price it as tarmac prices go up all the time got a letter from lafarge today tarmac is going up again,you know how much you are gonna pay if he prices wrong its his loss,but you still get your margin on top mark

Sounds like a right crap spec!

We've done a lot of church work - I must get some pictures, as we've done something VERY similar to this, but we used a resin bonded surfacing system, not surface dressing.

Tar and Chip is bad enough when it's carriageway width, but when you've a tiny strip, positioned between expensive-to-replace yorkstone flags, and some pillock architect who honestly thinks a 10mm Golden Gravel will stay stuck for longer than a week, it's best not to get involved.

If the silly architect is insistent on 10mm GG, then she'll have to plump for resin-bound, not scattercoat. If she's hell bent on scattercoat, she'll have to reduce the agg size and she'd be better off using resin (cue Simeon) rather than bitumen.

i would suggest 'clearmac' made by ayton ashphalt part of maygurney

which is golden gravel sourced from east anglia bonded in a clear macadam binder laid as a wearing course

colas leochip vls works well as a surface dressing.they will be able to give you coverage rates/ideal stone size to use etc.

The Colas stuff *is* good, but it isn't what this architect has specified: she seems to believe you can bond a whopping 10mm aggregate to a surface binder, and that it will then stay put. In her dreams, perhaps!

I've just checked my Colas Fun Pack and while there's ample description of the LeoChip, there's no mention of aggregate size. I know for highways work, it's usually a 3mm chip, and some decorative surfaces will use a 6mm, but 10mm is way, way too big.

have had no joy from any tarmac company (as we suspected) they won't touch the job with a bargepole

Rang ronacrete today to get a price per sq m of their resin bound paving. They promised to ring back but have not, and i have to send this quote off today!!

anyone on here know how much this stuff costs?

got about 52sq m to do

when i spoke to tony the other day about a similar thing he said allow Â£45/m2 for resin then the aggregate on top of that. but don't hold me to that haha

Last month, I had quotes from a very reputable installer regarding a job in NW England. For a standard Chinese bauxite or equivalent (not sure what the equivalent would be) laid as resin bonded (scattercoat) they wanted 27 quid per mÂ² while for a similar but larger aggregate laid as resin bound (trowelled) laid to 12-15mm depth would cost 42 quid.

This was for 340mÂ², assuming the substrate was in place and no issues with site access. One visit.

52 square metres is going to cost a good bit more than that. 25 quid is way too cheap.
