hello to one and all on this wonderful site. Slightly off topic I know but...
I am renovatng a lounge in a 1930's semi and we want to open up the fireplace to make space for a multi fuel stove. I was thinking of having something like riven slate tiles / slabs on the floor under the stove and for the hearth.
Does anyone have ideas/experience of what would be best materials and maybe where to source them? The other thing is we are going to have carpet so the hearth would need to be a bit higher than the carpet so thicker slates/slabs would be better.

As long as the fire is not in direct contact with the hearth (which used to be the definition of a hearth), you can use almost any stone you fancy. We supplied/installed quite a few yorkstone hearths over the years, and I've seen plenty of Welsh Slate hearths across the border. Granite is currently popular, and solely because it was in the house when I bough it and I can't be arsed to change it, my own hearth is a big slab of Italian marble.
