Yes it is an odd question, but digging down I've discovered loads of shingle. I'm told that this is normal as it is apparantely over a pipe leading to a manhole (I've read the bit on the site about this).
But the question is, can I put my type one MOT over what seems to be pretty loose stuff which I can put a spade straight through? Is using a geo-textile sheet between the two a solution, which Tony has kindly advised me to do when I found a depth of soft sand a quarter of a meter down.
Can i lay my patio over shingle?

Thanks Sean. Got a bit worried as my spade went right through the shingle, so I then dug down and found a long pipe leading to a manhole. Somehow I just couldn't imagine that shingle supporting a patio but if shingle in a trench is structurally sound I'll put my MOT over it after the geo-textile sheet.
