Patio flagstones (slabs), concrete flags, stone flags including yorkstone and imported flagstones.

Not acceptable at all.
Let him take you to court,its just a threat anyway. No judge would make anyone pay in full for that.

May i ask did you get any other quotes and was his quite cheap?

We did get a few quotes over the sapce of a month or so...And believe it or not he was one of the most expensive.

We also intended to check up on past jobs etc, but to be honest (and the reason now why we have lost out) is that i work away and we were in need of a holiday, so it kind of took a back step and we let him get on with it.

We have overpaid (since found out) for the slabs, overpaid for the fencing and lawn and we also paid him upfront (not the full amount) before we went away.

We are actually down in money now and we have since had 3 landscapers to the house who have all come in with figures between £1200 and £2000 to put it right.

The mess or overgrown land you see was meant to have been prepared and lawned also, i paid for the topsoil and had it delivered before i went, as you can see its pretty useless now. We also paid him upfront for this part.

Its going to cost us around £600 to sort this area out....

We are out of pocket over this...And although we knew beforehand the correct way of going about things when contracting someone, we shot ourselves in the foot and made the age old mistake and trusted someone on there word..

Well just a follow up.
Thanks to everyone for your comments and advice. This finally went to court last month
and the Judge found in my favour, so i was awarded most of the cash back.

I,ll still be out of pocket as im going to have to get someone to remove the mess you see
and relay it.
