Hi,

I have just had a retaining wall built in my garden to form two terraces. My problem is that they dug out too far behind the wall (almost one metre back). They have now just filled this void with gravel which is fair enough, but I wanted to install a path on the top which would have been where the gravel is now. This will obviously not be compact enough to bed a patio onto, so what should I do? Do I have to dig it all out and then compact it layer by layer or is there anything else which can be done?

Many thanks,

Rams

Cover the gravel with a construction grade geo-textile and then lay your paving as per normal.

Usually, when backfilling a retainer wall to such an extent, we'd incorporate a geo-grid to help stabilise the backfill, but also to help the wall do it's retaining more effectively. You may want to consider digging out 150-250mm of the gravel, inserting a geo-grid, replacing the gravel, and then go for the geo-textile on top of all that build-up.
