Hi again,

I now have to grout the patio and the suppliers gave me Rompox drain. It all seems very simple and straightforward. However, I have one question.

It states that the depth of the gaps between slabs must be 30mm. I assume this is approximately 30mm. The reason I am wondering is that the gaps at the moment are all variable, most about 15mm. I have tried to increase the depth by loosening the cement with a drill but this could take a lifetime!! Is there a quick way of removing the excess mortar and what is the minimum depth?

Thanks!

25-30mm depth is a strong recommendation. That usually means that the manufacturer is happy to claim that the product will be fine as long a sit achieves that depth. Which is not quite the same as saying that it will definitely fail if less than the minimum recommended depth is used.

I've seen Romex Drain work satisfactorily in patio flag joints as shallow as 15mm, so I'd probably risk it, if it was my project. I'd want to be certain the joints were clear of any crap, though, and I'd want to be sure I had at least 8-9mm width, preferably 10-12mm.

I doubt it would fail, but, because the joint depth is less than the manufacturer's recommendation, you can't go crying to them if it does fail. And don't come crying to me, either...this is just a suggestion, not a recommendation! :D
