Blocked soakaway

Foul and surface water, private drains and public sewers, land drains and soakaways, filter drains and any other ways of getting rid of water.

We have a sunken terrace that is drained into a soakaway. A few days ago we noticed a lot of clear water on the terrace. It had not been raining. It proved impossible to clear the blockage but we found a lot of debris such as sand and small stones in the pipe. After three days the water disappeaered and the drainpipe worked again.

The terrace was created two years ago and we did notice at the time that the workers did empty some debris through the drainhole despite our remonstarnces. We have had no problems with drainage up until now.

Any ideas as to what might have happened and how we can prevent it in future.

what dave said. also place a length of rolled up chicken wire, rolled in a ball shape and wedge it into the hopper. that will stop a lot of silt etc; and is easy to take out and clean.
