That's pretty much our situation, but we finished early today, for once!

We used to use subs but decided to invest in training the right staff.

We now have 4 full timers on the books and they are (usually) a dream.

One of them got his nose out of joint when we brought a foreman in over his head but unfortunately he has not got much get up and go.

We had a "performance review" type chat today where he basically got told where the land lay. He has cocked up royally on the last 3 jobs - all through being slack - and then on Friday he ran his mouth off at me in front of a customer.

He knew he was in it up to his neck so I let him stew until today and then asked him why he was so unhappy in his job and what we could do to improve it. He said he felt that he did not get a say in how the job was run and felt overlooked. I explained that is how is it when you are one of the lads and not a gaffer. If you want to be a gaffer get your head down, do your work right and the chance will come when we think you're ready.

I also said I 'd be happy to provide him a reference for another similar job if he felt we weren't the right employer.

He agreed that no verbal warning needed for his gobbiness on Friday and will get his head down and earn us back the £600 or so his cock ups have cost this month.

As long as keeps up his end so will we. He's not a bad lad but only 21 and prone to the sulks.

Ours work 7 till 4 at the mo - but if they have an early doors then they will work late to get jobs done when needed. We are fair to them and we expect them to be fair to us. It has to be a 2 way relationship otherwise it will always fall out of bed.

There's no way I'd tolerate a gobby and sulky 21 yr old!

How does he affect the rest of the workforce when he is in a sulk?

We have tried to get lads who are willing to work but have found that 17 yr olds dont know their arse from their elbow these days and they think the world owes them. We tend to get to site for 730am and leave somewhere between 1630 and 1800 depending on what has to be done and how we feel. We also get more done in the morning even though we feel we work harder in afternoon. :)

..........and earning £200 a week is where they will stay if they don't wake up. It's their choice!

You sound like a good bloke to work for.
Although perhaps you could let him have his say and try to make it seem his contributions are being listened to.

We have tried but to be honest some of the "ideas" he has about ways to do things are a bit off the wall. We have enrolled him on a Landscaping NVQ starting September. Will wait and see how long it is before the tutor complains he thinks he knows it all too!

The bottom line is we listen to all our staff but at the end of the day you can't have a foreman who is being expected to do a straw poll of his lads on how to do everything - otherwise they should be on £200 a week not £400!

Jeesas, Im glad Im not in your game. Im a joiner, but have done loads of different house bashing jobs. Have grafted my balls off from leaving school in 85. Long hours on the buildings are over for me now, have had a cushy number for the last few yrs. I realised life is too short for 12hr+ shifts just to make others rich.

Altho nothing better than starting work at 7 on a warm sunny summers morning (only now Id want to be away for 3)
