Increasingly, permeable paving is being specified for many new build projects, including housing, commercial and retail developments. The nonsense regarding imposing this on homeowners is more about appeasing the readers of the <spit> Evening Standard and <double spit> Daily Mail than it is about seriously tackling surface water.

It probably comes as no surprise to hear that Scotland and Ireland are already way ahead on Eng-er-land when it comes to the use of permeable paving on new build projects, and several large commercial operations now specify permeable paving as a standard feature on all their new premises.

When the river is coming up your garden, where does the SUDS drain to? I really don't see how this helps on the flood plains.

It helps by attenuating the surface water before it gets to the flood plain.

However, it still doesn't make it right to be building on flood plains. I write this from the security of living in the second highest house in the village! :p
