Hi folks, first go at this forum business so be kind!
Laying a couple of patios soon and will be using block pavers as soldier edging. Have seen varying methods in the styles of haunching and wondered what is best advised in my circumstances. The patios are only for foot traffic but still, want a good solid edge.
Some diagrams show the edging set in deep concrete straight down onto the subgrade soil with the subbase MOT and sand etc all therefore nicely contained. Other diagrams show the edging set in concrete on top of the MOT. This strikes me as a better option as you then have a good solid start for your concrete and haunching. The dilemma is if I take this option my edging block pavers will still be nicely haunched but with a lesser amount of concrete as a bed underneath in order to keep at same level with the patio slabs with a standard 50mm bedding. The concrete bedding for the edging block pavers maybe as little as 20mm underneath on top of the MOT. Sound to little? Any advice on either method be good!

I *know* this has been covered previously, but I'm buggered if I can find the page.
In essence, you *must* have an adequate bed depth. For patios, I would suggest this should never be less than 50mm at the very minimum. Owt less isn't adequate to support itself, let alone the rest of the pavement. For driveways, 75-100mm minimum.
Now, whether you achieve that critical bed depth by scraping out some of the sub-base, or by constructing the edge courses on top of the sub-grade/capping layers using extra-deep bedding prior to placing the sub-base, is entirely up to you. My preferred method would be to place the sub-base, then scrape out a shallow channel for the bedding....
