While I was back in Ireland last week, a friend told me of a wedding invite they'd received which revealed that the happy couple, having been living o'er t'brush for a good while, did not need household goods as presents, and cash was preferred. Without a trace of irony, they suggested 300 Euro (240 quid) from couples and a bargain 150 Euro from singletons.
I know what they'd have got from me...some nice folding paper of the Andrex variety: used, of course! :p

it all depends on personal circumstance, really but i remember my wedding,1 brickie give us £70 and another £10 and they worked together
says a lot about ppl little things like this, considering we had a free bar for 6 hours
my auntie from scotland who was seriously ill and on a pension had gone to the tally man and got a loan so she could give us a scottish £100 note
and we got 5 toasters lol

After my and my and my new wife to be divorce we had a secret wedding. no pressies, or wonga. everyone went mad at us, kids through wobblies. but we was and still are happy. could of done with pressies etc as we both came off worse in the divorces and ended up in a tiny caravan for 3 years till we could afford to get back on the ladder. Hard times, happy times.
I always feel uncomfortable about wedding presents both giving but especially when I recieved them. We didn't ask for or expect much but I still felt like a beggar. I always give enough to cover what it would have cost them to have us there for the day if it's for the evening only then they can f##k off. 300 euro is about the going rate in Mexico(rep of Ireland)(Bandidos IYKWIM) thats why you wont see a wedding there with less than 200 people at it. Everyone brings an envelope with cash and gives it to the best man. One couple I know paid the wedding off with all their cash and I reckon there wasn't change from 25 grand. I'm proud to be the tight Scotsman and don't care about what they think it's better that a slap in the face with a kipper. £100 if they're good friends
thers a lot of pressure on irish kids to have a big wedding (my wife is Irish descent) so there's always about60 cousins and 20 uncles etc,i think we had 200 all day 10 yrs ago and it cost 20k we got £2,500 in gifts which we used for the honeymoon
the dress cost £1500 and its only been worn once,i could get 10 off ebay for that!!

the bill for my wedding still smarts and keeps me awake at night and I didn't have to pay for it. I would have been quite happy with a £60 registry office do with just the two of us. But the lady gets what the lady wants.
Our wedding seems so long ago but is was only 22 March. We asked everyone to have a good time and not worry about presents cos we have 3 kids and a house already.
Everyone wanted to know what we really wanted - so we finally decided on "doing the garden". We asked for vouchers and have put them away till the winter.
Hopefully hubby will be better by then but he took another turn today and the quack has referred him back to the brain doctor for another round of tests with the reassuring words "because it could be MS".
Will keep you all posted and thanks for the good wishes so far - if the bugger could make his mind up between a stroke, blood clot, brain infection or something else I'd know what to tell you all
