Laying on stone dust ?

It depends on the quality of the stone dust. Some 'stone dusts' are more or less a sand, and, as long as they meet the criteria of a Class M or Class C sand (BS882), then they are perfectly suitable. However, if they are too fine or too coarse, then they could cause problems with settlement/movement at some later date.
For a commercial or propfessional project, you should NOT use any bedding material that does not meet the requirements for a bedding sand that are published on the Aggregates page of the main web site, but, fo a DIY project, you can do as you please - all I can do is advise what would be best.
