if you are a tradesperson, and you carry waste in a vehicle, you MUST have a waste carriers licence.
They cost £140 and last for three years
This is regardless if you think you could sell it on, i.e. rubble, tree shreddings.
You can log onto the environment agency website and search for carriers in your area.
Its amazing those who don't have one that should
I believe the fine is around £5000

You're lucky they have let you use the dump. We had to have 3 skips outside our house with changeovers until out licence came through!!
It certainly made enough of a mess of the front for the council to agree to let us drop the kerb ready for our driveway which I am assured by he of the two wacker plates will be constructed this winter.
If you don't have your own licence you could always ask one of the others nicely if they will do a cash price to take your rubbish away under their licence till yours comes through. Ours took 8 weeks when we renewed last year!!!
Good luck with the Environment Agency - you'll need to call em once a week on their Milton Keynes number to chase them and they they outsource the printing of the cards which can take another 4-6 weeks for any staff you want a licence for.

in this day and age of recycling and as a gardener, you are only ever carrying compost (in its raw un-composted form) :;): if you know what I mean, therefore no license needed.
you'd think, but they know everytrick in the book
I have asked them on the telephone about the various waste disposal problems
For me to get rid of one fence panel, it's £70. If i take a tonne there. it's £70
So i asked if i could store it up at my yard till i had a load, then dispose of it.
They said this would be classed as a waste transfer station, so no.
I also asked if when i have done a tree job, and shredded the branches, can i transport it on the road without a licence as it is now a viable product.
No its still waste came the reply
Can I store it in my yard for mulch?
yes but you need a seperate licence, and we want to inspect the premises
Can I crush concrete and store it in my yard?
No you need a special licence, and only then if you use it for aggregates!!
supposing i buy some hardcore from someone. Its not waste then is it?
yes. you need a licence!
so you see, no matter how hard we try, we cannot win
They want us all to recycle, but when it is so hard and expensive to do so, its no wonder we don't bother

We have just had our revised prices from the tip. I don't know whether these are set centrally but in case they are these are now: -
Inactive waste (soil/hardcore) £15.00 per tonne (with £30.00 minimum charge)
Active waste (basically anything else!) £60 per cubic metre OR £71 per tonne measured across the weighbridge with a minimum charge of £30
Might be a cheaper way for us to get rid of the crappy tranny van methinks! Wonder how much it'll cost to dump that on the weighbridge.
Lemme know if we are being stung her darn sarf won't you all!

you van will most likely be collected for free, so even cheaper than the tip:D With the price of skips its getting so these licences are actually cheaper in the long run, but we will have to see. Portsmouth city council tried to get me to have one, but so far i've wriggled out of it. seems its just another way of them getting more of my hard earned dosh:(
