It was more the moral of respecting the tools of the trade, not the cost of replacements. You respect your tools, you respect your work. Besides, you'll eventually knock the level out of plumb leading to poor workmanship.
Anyway, its just as easy to tap blockwork down with the offside trowel edge (as its intended purpose is for tapping and brick splitting, a good trowel is tempered to a stronger grade on the reverse of the laying edge - hence the truth in left and right handed trowels).
true but as i have mentioned here before levels aren't what they used to be
my first stabila cost £60 in 1984 ,really solid
now they are £30 a pop but last about a year
i personally think the work is more important than the tool and the lucre that comes with doing a lot of quality work,
i have gone through 7 marshalltown trowels 3 whs and 1 tyzak trowels in the last 20 odd years,the tools dont last forever but hopefully the work does
what exactly do you assess MRA
i ask this because i have a bee in my bonnet about the way our 3rd year apprentice was assessed
it seems that brickie college now is 90% paperwork
hes got top marks from his assessor yet cannot build a 21 course face work corner???

There is gently tapping with the edge of the
trowel, then there is banging it down with a lump
hammer.
