Street license

ive been doing tarmac and paving for about 20yrs now as a family concern, i want to start dropping pavement but need a street licence but dont know how you go about getting one and what it consists of. i have the 5000000 liability.

you need to do two things:
1. get on the approved contractors list with your local authority
2. send your operatives/supervisor on the road and streetworks course-

I think there was a post on this last year.

The general feeling was that unless you have three/four jobs side by side it ani`t worth the trouble.

The specs you have to work to, the trip to the quarry for three barra`s of T Mac, tipping charges etc all push the price above what most people are willing to pay, so there isn`t much room for a nice big mark up for yourself.

Have a look through earlier posts and you will find far keener minds than mine saying pretty much the same, one of those nice moderators might even point you towards it after he has gotten over crashing out of the FA Cup.

you need about £900 + vat to make a decent profit on them

I am from down the west country and they would laugh if you said £900 for a drop pavement,
We charge about £450 for a set of 5 kerbs,
1 ton of 20mm base = £50
1 ton of 6mm wearing course =£60
Kerbs £25
Concrete £30
Tip £20
Fuel £20
Total £170
I can do one in about 4hrs

concrete/fuel/stihl saw/roller/pick up-£100

you could also factor into your profit margin - insurance/holiday pay/cost for sending at least one of your men on streetworks course/downtime due to bad weather/quiet periods/cost of replacing machinery etc etc etc.

what profit are you making on £450 when you factor in the above?

i know the answer, because we were doing them for £450, 4 yrs ago until we sat down and realised we werent making any profit at that price.

well i couldnt bet against the town joe so i had twenty on there being more than 4 goals!!!

like the fellas say dropping kerbs to spec is an expensive pain in the neck for contractors ,council in luton will only let their own contrators do it,NO one else is a llowed

3 men a day £400, why 3 men when i myself can do one in 4 hrs, i guess 1 works and the other 2 watch. You are talking london prices. Down here big contractors charge about £650 and the council about £800, as i said you wouldnt get any work down this way charging £900 plus VAT. 3 ton of asphalt for a standard drop pavement how thick do you lay then.... 300mm. If we charged £900 plus vat down here we would be on rouge traders within weeks.

HOW CAN YOU CHARGE FULL DAY WHEN YOU HAVE LEFT THE SITE BY 12 AFTERNOON. TAR PLANT NOT FAR AWAY AS THEY ARE TEN APENNY DOWN HERE ( MUST BE 12 PLANTS I KNOW JUST OFF HAND) TIPPING WOULDNT EVEN BE £20 DOWN HERE. yOU LOT HAVE ME SO CONFUSED.

i used to do them with concrete and setts on a saturday morning for £250 ,but those days have gone
what about time spent going to and from jobs? insurance,public liability,wear and tear on tools and vehicles,diesel at £1 a litre?

i like the building game but my days of "love" jobs or "work at cost" jobs is gone
whatever it costs you + 25% profit is a reasonable amount,luton borough council charge £750 +VAT for a crossover
minimum tip up here is 1 tonne@ £50
minimum concrete is 1M3 @£120
and i dont do half days,if i do a job and i am finished by 1 say by the time i go to the lock up and unload all the plant then go home it will be 3 o'clock anyway,so the day is done
remember when your back is wrecked all those punters that got a cheap crossover wont pay your bills

I don`t price for half days so i don`t invoice half days. What happens when you hit a
sh%t load of concrete or a service pipe is in the way.

Four hours on site + all the above LLL mentioned = a day, i assume you have already visited site to supply an estimate, who pays for that time ?

You will never be out of work my friend at those costs, you have to know your own worth. We don`t bother with that kind of work because we can earn more elsewhere, or to put it another way we will do the work at the rate we can earn elsewhere.

Anyway you will make more money coming up here and karting our crap away and tipping it down your neck of the woods.
