Why polymeric and not a sand/concrete mix?

Evening,
I'm looking at jointing a 1m x 8m path, made from rough finished setts on a concrete base, with gaps approx 15mm.
I've been advised to look at a poly jointing compound, but is there really that much difference if I brush in a sand/concrete mix and lightly wet it? Apart from the price that is.
Thanks in advance.

It is possible to use the higher-grade Romex products (such as D1) to point steps. I'm not convinced that "Easy" is suitable, despite what I've been told.
Regarding the Romex distribution debacle, there is now one single company responsible for selling the products throughout Britain and Ireland, and they have appointed a full-time British-based rep by the name of Andy Lorimer. In the immediate future, the products will still be available via the usual suspects (Bannister Hall, Ruscrete, etc) but Andy is working on expanding the number of stockists and hopes to have full, nationwide coverage as soon as possible.
Romex will be exhibiting at Cityscape in three weeks, and that will signify their determination to improve supply to the British market, and make it at least as well-supplied as is the Irish market. There's a new contact email for British customers (it's on the Romex page) and Andy is working on getting an 0845 number so that he can take calls wherever he is in the country.
