hi to all
I am block paving my drive and i have got to the area by the gates. My drive slopes down to the pavement and the gates come inwards. Wat i want to know is this, i have to create a dish in the screed bed for the gates to open and want to know is this done by hand and guesswork?
hope this makes sense.
cheers

the dish effect you speak of will look rubbish
either get new gates where the bottoms taper up in the middle to accommodate,or do away with them and get one of those ever so modern telescopic bollards
IMHO

Swing your gates over the screeded area and rub a block into the sand 10mm lower than the lowest point of your gate, use a few of these points as a guide to your level, the rest is hand screeding and a good eye, We had to put two 6ft wooden gates at the entrance to a sloped driveway a few a years ago and the guy I worked for set the hinges in such a way that they rose as you opened them, pure genius!

Obviously make sure you keep an eye on the levels and make sure you still have a good fall out to the road., so if you rub a block 10mm lower than the bottom of the gate at the furthest point the gate swings in and then 10mm higher than the edging to the road ( to allow for compaction) use a long straight edge to create a screed between these points, and use that as a guide, hope this helps

i think the hinges you mentioned are called :rising butt; should help to eliminate alot of the dish:) a few a years ago and the guy I worked for set the hinges in such a way that they rose as you opened them, pure genius!:)
One of the symptoms of an approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that one's work is terribly important.
