Hello peeps, bit of help needed please..

If you travel to work on a construction site in an employer's vehicle, eg from home or lock up etc, does your working day start when you get to the site, or when you get into the vehicle? In other words, if it takes 30 mins to get to the site, and 30 mins to get home, is that a payable hour, or just a perk that you don't have to use your own car to get to the site?

IMO it should be paid - but I know of a few builders round here whose employees don't get paid till they get to site

why would you get paid for getting a lift to work?
i know lads who do long runs( like 500 miles a week) and they get paid travelling half the journey i.e. 1 way but that is in their own motors
i worked for subbies in the 80's who would charge £10 a week diesel per man and it was a 2 hour trip either way to work
it was a case of if you dont want the work someone else will.
not sure how things stand now i know holiday entitlement went up to minimum 24 days last week for all on the cards men,which the lads wasted no time in telling me==> makes no difference to me they will get a smaller pay rise next time out to compensate for the extra 4 days
so all in all i would say its a perk

In Angola, you don't get paid for travelling to/from site.

But if your site is a long way away you don't have to do the half day on Saturday as it makes no sense travelling a long distance for a half day.

On commercial works, we paid half the usual day rate for travelling time to our cards-in men. Self-employed and subbies got nowt. Cards-in men using their own vehicles were given a few quid for fuel/wear'n'tear each week, but I wanted VAT receipts in return.

...following on from the previous post, the industry union (UCATT) used to issue guidance on travelling time payments, but the only thing I can find on their site now is summat about fares/expenses.

Start time on site is 8am, regardless of location. I pay nothing for up to 15m from an employee's home, and overtime and mileage about that.

The way I look at is if most of my work is in, say, Reading, why should I be penalised because my employee chooses to live in Maidenhead?

Thanks for all your replies, seems like it is a generally fairly grey area, and I couldn't find anything defintive on the tinterweb. Spose it should be made clear at the start of someone's employment just when the hours start and finish to save any trouble further down the line.

well the way we work it,is when you start with us ,transport to and from site in a 15 mile radius of luton is up to you
we pay full sick pay if it is genuine (which a lot of firms dont ,stat sick pay is only about 85 a week)
we dont stop any wet time or waiting time
if in the rare instance we work farther away(not if i can help it) we normally pay travelling one way
we used to supply vans etc but as per usual PPl started taking libertys,vans were seen carting furniture about,outside nightclubs,and 1 fella who shall remain nameless(tommy ma**en) dumped the pick up because it was snowing,and i mean just dumped it in the middle of the road and walked home!
if people wanted travel money ,lets just say their next pay review might be less than favourable

Full sick pay - now that's good. Aslong as it isn't abused.

a normal working man i reckon would have 2-3 days per year off with the odd cold etc
we had 1 bloke who had to take his 3 kids to the doctors ,dentists,opticians,you name it
so i started stopping him for these excursions (his missus was a housewife so she could have done it)
funny enough when the £££ stopped so did the days off.
