Office arse again - hardcore and setts suppilers?

Morning all,

Couple of quick questions...

Hardcore material, MOT type 1 - the best I can find so far is £35.00 per tonne. Is this reasonable? I'm looking to cover an area approx 5.6m x 7m with a pond area 1.5m x 2m in the middle. How much hardcore do I need?

Cobble setts - nothing too expensive, and ideally not the concrete remakes. Having looked at one of AJ Mac's previous answers I should be paying 60-90 quid per tonne, with each tonne covering 4-5 m². I can't find anything remotely near the price. Am looking to cover a strip 1m x 8m. Where should I start looking?

The house is near Ashby-de-la-Zouch in the midlands, so if there's anything geographically close it would be great.

35.00 is par for the course for bulk bags.

if you get it tipped will probably be nearer 20.00 including all part load charges.

What do you mean by "cobble setts". They are either cobbles, or they are setts: they can't be both, in the strictest definition of the terms'.

Assuming you mean setts, then what type of setts? Cubes? Long setts? Reclaimed? New? Granite? Sandstone? Whin?

It's a bit like asking for "a car" - you need to be a little more specific or you could end up with a Cinquecento!

square setts would be great, dark in colour and not too expensive ideally. I'm on a pretty tight budget, so I guess reclaimed is out of the question, but a bit 'rustic' would suit the job.

does that make more sense?

Most bm's will do a 5t load of MOT for around £100-£125, tipped loose.

If you want a rustic or natural look choose either granite (around 70p each or £57/sq.m at 9x9/m) or sandstone at 50p each or £40/sq.m.

If you are to lay 8 x 1 m that's a lot of setts and one HELL of a lot of pointing. Consider a polymeric...

for the uneducated, what's a polymeric?

please excuse if this one sounds daft, but I've seem em do it on the tele, can you simply brush in a dry course of sand and cement to the surface level then lightly water it all and therefore the mixture goes off?

the granite setts look spot on. out of interest, is that just gravel that's compacted for the drive area? and if so, how thick did you lay it?
