I am well used to doing crazy paving paths and patos, but I have had a request for a driveway(i thought this had died out).
Its approx 40m, and I was wondering, do I need to put down a concrete base on top of the sub, base, then lay the flags on a wet mix, or can they be laid as per patio, wet mix onto subbase?

beware dan they are a nightmare
last one i did over 15 years ago we bedded the broken slabs onto 100mm of lean mix on 100mm of hardcore (type 1 wasn't as prevalent then)
then the client specified birds beak pointing,so all the joints in section looked like this ---^----^-----
took us ages to point it all
i think the reason it died out was it was so bleedin expensive, even then it was about £65 a metre and that is what i was earning a day roughly then
i would imagine it would cost well over the ton per metre now
cheers LLL :)

I was going to throw a hige price at it for the sheer fact it is tedious and time consuming. Also, where can you buy crazy paving from?

I'd lay it directly onto 100-150mm of ST4 concrete, then slurry joint the lot, relying on an acid wash to clean off the bits of flagstone.

Assuming you'll use broken PCC flags, the best source is other driveway gangs. They're forever taking up old flags, and will often be grateful if you take them off their hands. Smash 'em up with the sledge, and prepare to "go crazy" trying to work out what goes where.

As I say on the main website, it's called crazy paving because you have to be crazy to do it!
